Welcome to Year Five.

We hope that your child has a happy and successful year, one in which they will grow both in independence and confidence.

Attached is a class timetable for this half term. Please encourage your child to look at this regularly to ensure the correct equipment is brought to school on each day. We have also included a topic plan which details the subjects covered across the year. Science, Art, DT, ICT, History and Geography will be taught through our afternoon topic lessons. French will be taught as a discrete subject once a week and Music and P.E. will be taught by our specialist teachers (Mr Groves, Miss Parish and Mr Cooper). This year, RE will be taught once every half term over a full day, this will allow the children to have a deeper understanding of the subject.

The weekly timetable shows your child’s P.E. days. A complete P.E. kit, including trainers should be kept in school. Unless it is very wet we will continue to do P.E. lessons outside so a tracksuit may be necessary for the winter months. P.E. clothing should support our uniform policy, white t-shirts and blue or black shorts / tracksuit bottoms. All jewellery should be removed for P.E. lessons, earrings can be taped by you or your child. We will be visiting the Splash for swimming lessons after October half term. Consent forms for this will be sent out nearer the time.

It is still important to be reading or sharing stories with your children. Role modelling good reading habits yourselves will also show your children that reading can provide lots of pleasure. When reading with your child it is important to ask a range of questions to check their understanding of the story. Below is a handy grid to help you get the most out of reading with your child:

Although your children are increasingly independent readers we would still love you to read with them at least once a week to check their understanding.

We would like to encourage all the children to enjoy writing. Any opportunities to write creatively at home would help support their learning at school. It would be fantastic if children brought in any independent writing they have done to share with the class. this website provides some good prompts for writing and has great short videos to inspire the children’s writing. The ‘SpellBetter’ app provides predictive text which could speed up the writing process and help children with their spellings.

Menus are available from the school office. Please note: school dinners now cost £2.20 and need to be paid for in advance.

Water Bottles.

We encourage the children to drink water during the day. Please can they be provided with a named water bottle to keep in the classroom in addition to their lunchtime drinks. Only water is allowed in the classroom.

We encourage the children to have healthy snacks at playtime. A tuck shop is sometimes available in the canteen where healthy snacks can be bought at a cost of 20p – 40p.

Please bring any money to school in a named envelope with the amount written on the front. It is easier for the office staff if the correct money can be sent and lunch money is paid in full at the beginning of the week.

As your child is an upper junior we do not expect them to bring any toys into school. However playground games like skipping ropes and footballs are permissible as long as they are well named.

Art is a messy subject! We have old shirts / t-shirts which we use as aprons during this subject, however would welcome any donations which would top up our stores.

Arriving and Leaving School.

Please ensure that children are not at school before 8:45am as there are no staff on duty to supervise them. We expect all children to be in the classroom for registration at 8:50am. When children arrive at school they should wait in the front playground. At the end of the day, please make sure your child knows where they are being met, and by whom.

Expectations and Rewards.

In moving to the upper juniors we have high expectations in terms of work load and behaviour. We will be following the whole school traffic light system for behaviour management and will continue with the ‘Star of the Day’ reward system. However each class teacher may have their own reward system which will be specific to their class.

We will no longer be sending home weekly spellings but will be teaching spelling patterns and rules in detail during the Literacy lesson. We will complete half-termly spelling assessments with the children focusing on the patterns we have learnt.

There will be an expectation that all children complete at least half and hour of Maths Whizz games every week. We will celebrate those children making the best progress in class and during celebration assemblies. The computer room will be available one lunchtime a week for those children who don’t have internet or computer access at home. Children that don’t complete their weekly Maths Whizz will not receive their merit sticker.

Homework will be sent home in books every Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday. The homework subject will alternate between English and topic / creative tasks. We will sometimes ask the children to practise a skill they have learnt that week, or alternatively children may be asked to research an upcoming topic. Where necessary examples will be posted on the school website and shared in the children’s books.

During the last half term of the Summer, the whole school will be taking part in a homework project which will be more creative.

Autumn Learning Cafe.

Each Year 5 class will be holding a space themed learning café on Thursday the 4th of October starting at 1:25pm, we would love it if you could come and join us, a detailed letter will be sent out nearer the date. For this café we will require clean empty glass jars with lids, any donations would be gratefully received.

A Final Note.

We consider ourselves to be a friendly and approachable bunch, so please come and see us if you have any questions or concerns. Quick queries can be discussed after school, or should you require a longer discussion, please make an appointment at the school office.

Alternatively you can contact us by email:

Mrs Lawes is currently awaiting a new school email so either contact Mrs Robinson or pop in and see her.

We look forward to a fantastic year ahead!
