Maths Club

Maths Club meets on a Monday after school, Years 2-6 in the Maths room downstairs (near the school garden and Bright Stars)

Maths Club: we investigate many mathematical areas and make connections with the world around us. I our club we use our mathematical knowledge to explain, justify and apply our thinking.

The club is open to all children from Year 2 to Year 6 of any ability.

Autumn Term 2018
Our first week we made new friends, investigated and used resources for reasoning and came up with our club rules together.  We all agreed maths club was to be fun and it is good to learn from each other.  We also added to a suggestions list of what we would like to do in maths club this year ... we have a busy programme ahead!!

We have learnt about Tessellation!!

We used shape to fit together so no gaps were visible and no overlapping. Check out the two larger patterns the group worked on together.

Continuing with our shape and pattern theme we have made 3D shapes from straws and polydrons. Mathematical language is used of naming the shapes and their properties of vertices, edges and faces.

The group were soon exploring patterns further by looking at the work of the 12th Century Italian Mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci. The children saw how his world-renowned Fibonacci sequence can be seen throughout nature; from snail shells, to the number of petals on a flower. Our younger members explored building the sequence using counting stones whilst some of the older children looked at plotting the 'Fibonacci spiral' on graph paper and finding the sequence on a number grid.

We finished the Autumn Term making mathematical paper chain, these had number sequences and multiplications on and some party games.

Have a great break over Christmas and we look forward a fun packed Maths Club starting again on 7th January 2019
