Little Chickens

Welcome to Little Chickens!

 Project Miro

In Reception we have been working on an art project based around the
Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist Joan Miro.
We have been exploring Miro and his art.
The children have be painting, drawing, sculpting and using the computer
to create their own work inspired by Miro.

 Our trip to the beach
11th July

With Miro in mind, we headed for the beach
to see what we could find to make artwork from.
(We took along some of our own art materials too.)

Everyone had a fabulously creative time!

We all had a brilliant day!

Week Commencing 25.03.2013:

This week we are holding a cake stall on the Reception playground. It will be on Tuesday 26th March from 3.15 - 3.45 and all profits raised will go towards further improving our outdoor area, including purchasing sides for our canopies.

We break up for the Easter break on Wednesday 27th March at 2.30pm and return on Monday 15th April to start the summer term. Enjoy your Easter break and let's hope that the weather starts to look a little brighter soon!

Week Commencing 18.03.2013:

We now have five newborn chicks in our classroom! Our five chicks are happy and healthy and can be seen in the classroom in their brooder underneath a heat lamp. If you are bringing other children in to look at our chicks please let our Reception children help them to follow our rules for viewing or handling them. Children need to wash their hands before and after viewing or handling. Thank you.

In addition to learning about how to care for newborn chicks, we have also been learning about other animals- we had a visit from Helen from Claws'n'Paws in Sheringham, along with some of her furry friends.

We have continued to learn about the time this week, sequencing the events of the day and thinking about what time they occur.

This week as part of a whole school project, our Reception children have also been thinking about how music makes them feel and representing this by painting.

You can see the final product on the large display boards outside the school hall.

Week Commencing 11.03.2013:

We now only have one week to go until our eggs hatch into chicks. There are seven in our incubator with smiley faces on, which means that they will hopefully hatch.

Some of our children have been very interested in making handbags, so our adults resourced this interest with knitting dolls, thread, needles and 'binka' sewing material. We have had a really fab response and the children have been developing their fine motor skills by making bags, wallets and laptop cases.

Our *MATHS CHALLENGE* this week has been to make your own clock, as we have been focusing on learning the days of the week, months of the year and the seasons before we move on to telling the time to o'clock. Once again lots of children have really jumped at the chance to show off their mathematical skills. All of our clocks can be seen on our mathematics working wall in the classroom.

Our work on chicks has also inspired some fantastic art and number work.

Our eggs will have been in the incubator for over 21 days by the time they have hatched.

Last week we wrote books about what we got up to in our February half term, and this has continued in to this week as it has been such a popular choice.

In Reception we have changed the way we teach Mathematics. We work over an eight day cycle Tuesday-Friday and Tuesday-Friday, to really unpick a unit of work and have opportunities to use it in our free play. To support the children in this we now have a weekly *MATHS CHALLENGE* that the children are encouraged to complete.
This week’s challenge was to make a number sentence using the symbols + or – and =. Lots of children jumped at the chance to complete a challenge and we had some fantastic calculation work from our Little Chickens.
